The Wantagh and Seaford Fire Departments took part in a plane crash drill at Zach's Bay Sunday.

The scenario: a regional jet with 75 people aboard fails a landing attempt on Ocean Parkway at Jones Beach. The plane, and a building, catch fire.

Emergency personnel simulated the treatment of patients on the plane and on the ground. Twenty-two patients were transported to Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) by FDNY and Yonkers MERV buses.

Hospital emergency department staff from NUMC registered, triaged and treated all of the patients. The hospital first activated a Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) level 1, then elevated to a 2 when staff realized the number of injured patients being transported to the medical center.

Fire departments from Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, Bellmore, Levittown, East Meadow, West Islip, Merrick and the FDNY, along with State Park Police, EMS units from Jones Beach, Suffolk and Nassau Police and representatives from hospitals and other agencies, all participated in the drill.
