Police Dog Helps Apprehend Suspect in Wantagh

A K-9 unit was called in after the suspect allegedly fled the scene.

A Levittown man was arrested early Thursday morning in Wantagh with the help of a K-9 unit after an alleged larceny.

According to Nassau County detectives, police responded to the location of Poulson Street for a larceny in progress. Police observed the defendant, Stephen M. Crawford, 44, carrying several items in his hands and he matched the description of the suspect.

Crawford fled the scene in the vicinity of Briard Street and Manchester Road, police said.

Officers conducted a search of the area and Nassau County K-9 Officer and his K-9 Thunder located Crawford hiding in the bushes on Edgerton Avenue, police said. Thunder apprehended the defendant by the lower left leg and officers placed him in custody at 5:44 a.m.

The proceeds of five GPS systems and one camera were recovered on Briard Street, police said.

Crawford is charged with criminal possession of stolen property. He will be arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.

The arrest information was supplied by the Nassau County Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.
