Police: Man Tussles with Officer in Wantagh During Arrest

North Babylon man charged with assault and illegal drug charges following struggle with police officer on Beverly Road early Thursday morning.

Nassau County detectives charged a North Babylon man with assault and possession of illegal drugs following a struggle with a police officer on Beverly Road in Wantagh Thursday morning.

According to detectives, around 12:04 a.m., Detrick Stewart, 40, of North Babylon, was observed operating a 1993 Acura southbound on Beverly Road in Wantagh with a fractured windshield. The vehicle was stopped by police and Stewart was observed reaching under the driver's seat.

Stewart was removed from the vehicle and instructed to remove his hands from his jacket pockets. However, he instead attempted to reach for his right pocket, police said.

According to police, a struggle ensued and both Stewart and the officer fell to the ground. Stewart attempted to kick the officer, but was eventually placed into custody. A knife was recovered from Stewart’s pocket.

The officer sustained a laceration to his hand and a contusion to his knee. He was removed to a local hospital and was treated and released for his injuries.

According to police, during a search of the vehicle, officers recovered bags containing what appeared to be cocaine and crack cocaine, along with numerous pills believed to be Oxycodone.

Stewart is charged with second-degree assault, three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and operating a vehicle with a fractured windshield. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Friday.

Can someone explain how the Nassau County Policy Department can afford to use police cars and trailers as billboards? A trailer/billboard (an eyesore) has been parked on Merrick Road at Wantagh Avenue for over a year. Now a police car/taxi car (???) is parked at the southbound entrance to the Wantagh Parkway. Let's sell these money wasters and stop this ridiculous practice.

It's a speed deterrent. Makes you slow down doesn't it? It's not using up any more money than if it was actually being driven 24 hours a day seven days a week. Imagine what it costs to fill that time up 3x a day. Relax.

Kevin - Unfortunately, it's people with attitudes like your's that have driven our taxes-up to the where they have become ridiculous. Wise-up. The trailer and car are a waste of money. They are ugly. We need to get rid of them.

Elmo, there are much bigger things you should be worrying about instead.

Thomas & Kevin...obviously neither of you knows how an economy works...? I'll enlighten the both of you...Since we have police and teachers making over 100 thousand a year, much more with overtime, many of the same individuals enjoy perks from the volly fire department which costs us much, not to mention all the disabled fireman collecting disability checks and seeing their chiropractor and others on our dime, even though their injury was sustained in the backyard mowing the lawn...This cesspool of Nassau has become a breeding ground for bigoted racist ignorant fools who can only work for the government, suck from the system, and keep passing it on... and collect rather than create and earn. More police, more prisons, sure thats what we need..Portugal has no law against drugs, its a health issue and they proper programs to rehabilitate rather than imprison...its called evolution, it is very backwards here, but neither of you are brave enough to admit it, or your gravy train will end. Trololo.

Oh my God....A teacher making $100,000 !!! Why is that bad. Why shouldn't teachers make a living wage? Does anyone have an idea what it takes to pay back student loans? Do we want morons educating our kids? Teachers, Cops and firemen are not bankrupting our County or State. Only the mind numb believe this, who are fed a daily diet of class warfare on our local media outlets. Shut off the TV and read about what is really going on today. The Government has the citizens fighting amongst themselves. Meanwhile our so called leaders and government officials can do what they please. Raise taxes, fund pet projects in a crony capitalist way of doing business. You fund my project, I donate to your re-election campaign. Meanwhile the citizens blame each other for the current state of affairs. It is people like Mr. Troll above who blame others for his life's troubles. He is an example of the ignorant, uninformed among us. As far as our Police go... Remember on thing. When a society makes war against its Police, it had better learn how to surrender to its criminals. Crime is running rampant in this County. And it is going to get higher. Police , Teachers and firemen support a civilized society. Make war against them and apathy sets in. Shut off the TV and pay attention !!! Read

I have no troubles Chrissy because I dont suck on the nipple of the county...I do see the only people able to keep their homes are pensioners with extra household income, MANY 3/4 disability city workers who I watch roof their own homes...I{ know personally 5 people who collect 3/4 disability from age 26 - 32 , we'll be paying them for a mighty long time for what in their words " i put enough time in, pay me" ..well I have family members who provide services to the county with injuries and dont want to suck on the nipple...and I'm all for teachers being well paid, unfortunately my kids teacher sends home notes that I have to correct the grammar and spelling, $$$ not well spent...and the volly fire tit sucks way too much money for nothing in return...look up what paid personnel get, on top of using any facility for their own private affairs etc...Dont feed me the line about police and fire in nassau...they are some of the biggest crooks i have ever met, embezzlement, drugs, rampant alcohol, underage included, and the list goes on... I know for a fact how inbred Nassau Cuntry is, and why its demise is round the corner. I'm not leaving so I'd like some real decisions to be made if this county is to have any future. Wake up Chrissy, the tit is empty.

Elmo - get your facts straight: The car is an Anti Drinking and Driving campaign, sponsored by All Island Taxi. The trailer belongs to the AMT Children of Hope Foundation - an organization that provides a safe place for mothers to drop children of unwanted pregnancies, thus saving the babies lives. Its a shame you see these two great causes as "eye-sores"

the cars are probably old-unuasble squad cars and they bought a graphics wrap for it...this is hardly overspending

WTF? This article was about cops taking down a drug dealer in our backyard and you people are arguing about trailers and teachers salaries. I salute the cops for taking scum like this guy down. God Bless.
Lorraine DeVita February 02, 2012 at 01:10 PM
Supply and demand - Drug dealers are around because there are customers! If people, teens etc werent USING then the drug dealers wouldnt find the impetus to be in our area. Parenting is tough however if you dont know if your kid is a user then perhaps there are issues that need to be addressed. Again, if people werent using in the area then the drug dealers wouldnt be here. This needs to be addressed in the home & the schools.. Who's buying the product? Someone is....

Hey Elmo......there are alot more uglier things out there we should be getting rid of.
