Police Respond to Brawl at Jones Beach

Queens man arrested following melee that involved 50 people Wednesday afternoon.

New York State Park Police arrested a Queens man Wednesday following a brawl that involved 50 people at in Wantagh.

Police said they believe the large fight originated at an ice cream parlor in the beach's central mall before spreading to the Jones Beach West Bathhouse area around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. Police were not immediately certain what prompted the melee, which occurred on a day where temperatures rose into the 90's and created huge crowds at Jones Beach.

Jonathan Santo, 23, of Flushing, was arrested following the brawl and charged with felony assault and resisting arrest. He was taken to an area hospital for minor injuries and was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.

A 19-year-old Queens man, who police did not identify, suffered a wound to his face from a bottle and was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow for his injuries, which were described by police as "serious." Many others involved in the brawl refused medical attention, police said.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.
