Six People Rescued from Boat Fire off Jones Beach

A 48-foot fishing boat catches fire just after 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Six passengers were rescued on a fishing boat that caught fire off of  in Wantagh Friday evening. 

Officials for the Nassau County Police Department Marine Bureau said a 48-foot sport fishing boat with six people aboard caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean around 300 feet off Jones Beach just after 5:30 p.m.. The U.S. Coast Guard Station Jones Beach Station received a distress call from the vessel at around 5:40 p.m. and notified the Nassau County Police Marine Bureau along with the Town of Hempstead Bay Constables, Freeport Fire Department and .

The six passengers were removed from the boat by the Coast Guard with the assistance of the Town of Hempstead Bay Constables to the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station in Freeport. One of the passengers sustained a minor injury to his hand and was treated at the scene, police said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, according to police. The boat is being removed by a private salvage company.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.
