Firefighters Deliver Baby at Wantagh Home

Woman gives birth in home Tuesday night.

Wantagh fire Department members and police are used to saving lives, but on Tuesday night they brought new life into the world.

Authorities delivered a baby boy after it was determined that his mother couldn't make it to the hospital on time to give birth there.

Fire officials and officers and officers from the First and Seventh Precincts were called to the scene of a Merikoke Avenue home where a 33 year-old woman had gone into labor.

An Advanced Medical Technician examined her and determined the contractions were too close to get her to the hospital on time.

The fire techinicians decided to make the delivery then and there, with police assisting and at 6:44 p.m., the woman had a new son.

Fire officials then took her to a nearby hospital where mother and son are doing fine.
