Wantagh Fire Department to Hold Blood Drive

Event to last from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The will hold their Semi-Annual Blood Drive at its headquarters on 3470 Park Ave. tomorrow from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The fire department has held a blood drive twice a year for “a good many years” according to Harry Loud, public information officer for the Wantagh Fire Department. The last blood drive in the fall brought in approximately 30 pints, but Loud said that they “always strive for more.”

“It’s usually the firefighter that donates, but the doors are open to the public and the reason in trying to get the word out,” Loud said.

People who want to donate blood at Tuesday’s drive must be between 17 and 75 years, in general good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. Volunteers must not have donated blood in the last 56 days and those with a history of Multiple Sclerosis, heart disease and/or stroke will not be accepted. However, those with diabetes that are not insulin-dependent and is under control will be allowed.

People age 75 and over who want to donate blood Tuesday must provide a physician’s letter as well as meet all the criteria. Social Security numbers will be required so donations can be crosschecked.

Since the blood drive is being held at night, the Blood Drive Committee and Ladies Auxiliary are hosting a light dinner with dessert and refreshments.
