Wantagh Fire Department to Host Open House

Program scheduled for Oct. 20 to feature fire safety demonstrations.

The Wantagh Fire Department announced last week that it will be hosting an “Open House” on Oct. 20.

The program is scheduled to last from 2-5 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Wantagh Fire District headquarters on 3470 Park Avenue in Wantagh with light refreshments served. At the event, winning certificates will be presented to those children who participated in the Fire Prevention Poster Contest held in local elementary schools.

Various demonstrations will be presented on the extinguishment of stove fires, fire department procedures at barbeque fires and the use of the Jaws of Life (Hurst Tool) utilized in automobile extrication. Children will be taught stop, drop and roll procedures and “Furball” the department robot will be on hand to interact with the youngsters.

Free blood pressure screening will be available as well as CPR and First Aid Training and the “Smoke House” will be utilized to present Home Evacuation Drills. Children will be encouraged to participate but all may do so if they so desire. Information will be available on Smoke Detectors as well as Carbon Monoxide Detectors.

The Underwater Search and Rescue Team and Hazardous Materials Unit will present information on equipment and procedures used in their specialized fields. A Thermal Imaging Camera, utilized to detect hidden fire as well as victims hidden by heavy smoke will be demonstrated.

Fire apparatus will be on hand for inspection and Membership information will be made available.

The Nassau County Office of Emergency Management will be on hand to discuss Hurricane Preparedness and the Town of Hempstead will provide hands on instruction in child seat safety as well as bicycle safety. The New York State Masons will also have a Child ID Program in place in the event you so desire to participate.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.
