Firefighters from the Wantagh Fire District recently spoke to students at Lee Road Elementary School about fire safety.
The students at Lee Road, which is located in Wantagh and in the Levittown School District, learned about the importance of smoke detectors, having a family escape plan and meeting place, and how to escape a burning building.
“When you hear a smoke detector, you have to think, think, think,” Wantagh Fire Department lead educator and firefighter Marcela Loeber told kindergarten through second-grade students at Lee Road Elementary School.
The most exciting part of the event was the third- through fifth-grade students’ visit to the fire department’s smoke house, a trailer designed to resemble a bedroom. Artificial dense smoke permeated the air as an alarm buzzed loudly to indicate a house fire.
A firefighter then directed each student to roll out of bed, scoot towards the door and feel for heat, push the window open, scream three times for help, and wait for assistance through the window. A firefighter was stationed on the outside to help each student with his or her escape.
