Wrong Way Driver Arrested on Wantagh Parkway

Elderly man charged with reckless driving.

An elderly man was arrested for driving on the Wantagh Parkway Sunday night, state police said.

Troopers said they received a report of a 71-year-old driver in a white Nissan was seen traveling north in the southbound lanes at about 8:11 p.m.

State police stopped traffic and set up a roadblock where the Nissan had last been seen. When the elderly driver approached, he went past the roadblock, but he was stopped south of the Southern State Parkway, police said.

The man told troopers that he turned the car around at the Jones Beach tolls, thinking they were closed, not realizing he was supposed to merge to the left.

He was charged with reckless driving, speeding, failing to comply with a lawful police order and driving the wrong way.

There has to be a better system to prevent such happenings, even if its 1 way spike strips??? Such actions are a disaster for nothing but death....

I agree that 71 is quite young to cut off from driving, but I am in support of SOME kind of requirement. Medical reviews may not have stopped this driver from being confused at the point of error, but the lack of judgment to recognize you are going against traffic, or are on the wrong side of the road, and continue, without pulling over, stopping, slowing, or calling for help is inexcusable. I've shared my concerns on elderly drivers before.. But there is no political will to do anything... Even after previous drivers have killed and maimed before. Kinda like gun control.

By the way... Does this 71 year old Nissan driver have a name and a hometown? I just love it when the Patch protects identities in reports of criminal conduct.
