Candidate Profile: Assemblyman David McDonough

A look at local state lawmaker running for a seventh term in Albany.

Name: David McDonough

Party: Republican 

Bio: Assemblyman McDonough was elected to the State Assembly in a Special Election in the 19th Assembly District held Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 and was re-elected to his sixth term in November of 2010. He is Chairman of the Assembly Minority Task Force on Public Safety and is the ranking minority member on the Assembly Transportation Committee. He also serves on the Assembly Health, Education, Veterans’ Affairs and Consumer Affairs committees. On a local level, McDonough is the past president of the Nassau County Council of Chambers of Commerce and from 1994 to 1998, served four terms as president of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce. McDonough was also an original member of the Development Committee for the Merrick Downtown Revitalization project and was a founding member of the Bellmore-Merrick Community Wellness Council. He has also been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Merrick for over 25 years, including serving as president from 1989-1990.

Education: McDonough served in the United States Coast Guard and the United States Air Force and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Columbia University.

District: The 19th Assembly District includes Seaford, Wantagh, Bellmore, Merrick, and portions of Levittown, East Meadow, North Bellmore, North Merrick, Freeport and Baldwin.
