Cuomo Announces New Extension for Sandy Relief

Deadline for disaster aid moved to Feb. 28; phone number below.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced Thursday that New Yorkers who lost their jobs or income due to Hurricane Sandy have an extension to Feb. 28, to apply for federal disaster unemployment assistance.

“The physical destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy in New York was unprecedented, and as a result, many New Yorkers have been put out of work,”  said Cuomo who was touring downstate on Thursday and delivered an address on the SUNY Old Westbury campus.

“These federal funds will continue to help those who are still trying to get back on their feet," Cuomo said.

Disaster unemployment benefits are available to provide financial support to anyone who has lost their job and live or work in Nassau, Suffolk, the five boroughs of New York City, Westchester and upstate counties as far north as Ulster.

To apply for unemployment benefits or disaster unemployment assistance, those affected by the storm and have lost their job or income should call the Telephone Claims Center (TCC) at 1-888-209-8124, or 1-877-358-5306 if they live out of state. Applicants should answer the questions to indicate they lost their job due to Hurricane Sandy.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.
