Fuschillo Bill to Honor Fallen Officer Approved by State Senate

State senator is asking the state to name a bridge after Wantagh's Michael J. Califano.

The New York State Senate has approved a bill proposed by Charles Fuschillo, R-Merrick, to name a bridge after fallen police officer Michael J. Califano.

Califano, a resident of Wantagh, was on February 4 when he was conducting a vehicle and traffic law stop on the westbound side of the Long Island Expressway at exit 39 in Old Westbury at 10:55 p.m. Friday. Califano then had his police vehicle struck from behind by a flatbed truck. He was fatally wounded in the collision.

According to the proposed legislation, the Glen Cove Road bridge overpass which crosses over the Long Island Expressway in Old Westbury would be re-named “Police Officer Michael J. Califano Memorial Bridge.” The bridge is near the site where Califano was stuck.
