Jones Beach Sees Increase in Visitors

Wantagh landmark has jump in 2012 visits compared to one year ago.

in Wantagh has seen a jump in visitors this year.

Entering Labor Day weekend, 4.2 million had visited Jones Beach in 2012, a 77,624 increase from the same period a year ago. Overall, New York State Parks have seen a 5.6 percent visits increase in 2012 from last year, park officials announced last week.

New York State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey attributed the increase in visits to solid weather as well as a number of well-attended events, including the held on Memorial Day weekend.

"We've had a tremendous season so far and we hope that our visitors enjoyed their time swimming, camping, golfing, hiking and sightseeing at our parks and historic sites," Harvey said. "It is gratifying that so many people continue to enjoy and appreciate the New York state park system year after year.”

Lifeguards are scheduled to remain on duty in the Field 6 section of Jones Beach through Sept. 16. The Jones Beach  and area are scheduled to stay open until November.
