Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced Monday morning that he has lifted the mandatory evacuation order for residents living in storm surge zones on the north and south shores of the county.
The evacuation order was put in place on Friday to protect residents from the heavy rain and winds from Hurricane Irene. While the hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm as it hit Long Island, the storm still caused endless amounts of damage along the South Shore and has left hundreds of thousands of residents still without power across Long Island.
"With Hurricane Irene assessment and recovery underway and nursing homes and hospitals reopened, I officially lifting the evacuation order," Mangano said. "I remind all residents to use caution upon reoccupying homes and neighborhoods as power lines may still be down."
Mangano said that the public shelter at Nassau Community College will remain open for any resident who is unable to reoccupy their home and unable to find a friend or family member who resides locally.
