Newly Added Wantagh High School Hurricane Shelter Full to Capacity

Local facility one of over two dozen emergency shelters set up for storm.

was added by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano Saturday as an emergency public shelter during Hurricane Irene, and soon after opening was announced as full to capacity late in the afternoon.

The Wantagh High School hurricane shelter opened at 3 p.m. Saturday, but soon after was announced as full to capacity by Mangano. The local high school joins over two-dozen shelters that Mangano Friday that would be open during the storm for people forced to evacuate their homes.

The Last Hope Animal Shelter on 3300 Beltagh Ave., Wantagh (formerly Bideawee) was also opened Saturday afternoon as an emergency shelter for animals during the hurricane.

The up the east coast has prompted for Wantagh and Seaford residents who live south of Merrick Road.
