Story written and reported by Tony Schinella of Concord, NH Patch.

Rep. Peter King, weighed in on Republican strategy in 2014 and 2016, while taking jabs at the president in New Hampshire Monday night.

The Seaford  Republican and potential 2016 presidential candidate, who has been in the state a few times in the last year, told attendees at a fundraiser the trip to the Granite State was a great opportunity to meet with activists in the party.

King said he believed Republicans would hold the House in 2014 and said the focus should be on the U.S. Senate in an effort to hold the line on the president’s agenda. He expressed disappointment in President Barack Obama “for constantly apologizing for American power” and stated that he “wasn’t telling the truth” on issues like the rollout of the Affordable Care Act.

“The plan itself is bad enough,” he said. “The program itself is bad enough. But to have a president mislead the American people the way he did is absolutely inexcusable.”

King called on Republicans to “reconnect” with the “rank-and-file people,” noting that “the media and the so-called elites” would not be supporting Republicans in the future.

“We have to not be afraid to take tough positions,” he said, “and not go out of our way to start trouble … we have to do what we have to do. We have to reconnect with the American people.”

King said Republicans needed to promote holding the line on taxes, being fiscally responsible, and standing by the military and being prepared. He also said veterans and returning service men and woman needed to be ensured that they would get the care they were entitled to and deserved.

King, who sits on both the Homeland Security and Intelligence committees, said the United States was, “in many ways,” in graver danger to terrorist threats than before Sept. 11. He said Al Qaida had “morphed and metastasized and we have now have eight or nine different components around the world” as well as “lone wolves” in the United States who are part of the international movement to target this country. Since Sept. 11, 15 attacks have been stopped in New York alone, he said.

“I see the threats from the inside out and the outside in,” he said of his work on the committees, “and this is a constant level of danger we are at.”

On the budget, King said the government needed to stay open and Republicans needed to keep from being “sidetracked.” Instead, he suggested fighting for conservative principles, “as hard as we can.” King also praised  Kelly Ayotte, R-NH, for all her work in the Senate.

King also announced the formation of a new political action committee called American Leadership Now, to promote Republican leadership and to “undo the damage we’ve endured during the years of the Obama Administration.”

Before his talk with Republicans, King said he was enjoying his trips to the state and if he decides to run for the Republican nomination for president, he would make a formal announcement in 12 to 18 months.

When asked what made him different than every other Representative to Congress who has been unable to make the jump to the White House, King said his work on keeping the nation safe, appearances on cable television, which has allowed him to connect with millions of Americans directly, would help. He added that coming from a diverse Congressional district and being able to build coalitions with social conservatives, organized labor, and minorities, as he had done in his House races, would assist him in winning.

Peter King has served his district well in the past. But the GOP style of go along to get along politics has gotten us over 17 trillion dollars in debt and trillions more in unfunded liabilities. This is debt that is impossible to pay back. After the dust settled, and we look back, we see that Ted Cruz was right. Obamacare is un workable. A huge government bureaucracy. We need leaders that stand on principle. To stand for what is the right thing to do for the Country. Not for his local district.

Who fed you those lines, Chris and why have you swallowed their 'bait', hook...line...and sinker? Your last three sentences reveal your naivete about the way of the world, but especially about governing and politics. Ted Cruz, Chris...really, Ted Cruz? I wish you had the gumption to use your last name on Patch, so nobody would ever get the two of us confused with one another.

Lines? You are an example of someone who, when faced with facts , relies on personal attacks instead of debate. What has my last name have to do with anything???? Any person who studies recent history without the fog of party politics can see what serious trouble this Country is in. Our leaders in Government have failed us. Republican and Democrat. We have over 17 trillion dollars in debt. We have large cities in the United States going bankrupt. Unable to function. We have open borders, with illegal immigration with no end in sight. These illegals, or undocumented workers, as you might label them, come here for free health care, education etc.. I am in favor of "legal" immigration. Lets take the best and the brightest to build our Country from "anywhere" in the world. We have endless wars. Our young men and woman and dying overseas……for what? Nation building? To what end? Our own Government has voted to cut their military benefits, as they plan to send them to start new wars? Syria…Iran? Did you think NAFTA was a good idea? It was another example of our Republican and Democrat run government to ship our jobs to other countries. Why have an American manufacturer a product when a worker in China can do it for so much less. Speaking of China…..did you know that our Government has allowed more food to be imported to our Country. Last year their dog food poisoned our pets. Lets see what happens this year. Does Lindsey Graham or John McCain have any ideas? How about the Speaker of the House our the minority leader of the Senate? Do you know why they have no ideas or plan?! It is because they put PARTY FIRST…..COUNTRY SECOND!! They do not stand on principle. There is an awakening taking place in America. Country first! George Bush had it all. The executive branch, the House, the Senate. What did we get? The prescription drug program and a war that put us in more debt. Unfunded liabilities. Chris…..is this the legacy you want to leave to your children and grandchildren?

It was a simple request, Chris. Please use your last name on Patch to prevent readers from confusing either of us from the other. You are entitled to express your opinion, I just don't like having your opinions mistaken for mine. ..................................................................................................... We are discussing Peter King in the context of the inevitability of the Republican Party choosing a candidate for President in the 2014 election. King is pointing to his own skill at the political art of compromise, and his accomplishments of forging "...coalitions with social conservatives, organized labor, and minorities". I agree with his assessment that these are valuable qualities that could help him win that election, once nominated. ...................................................................................................... If Pete King wins the Republican nomination, I will certainly vote for him. Would you, Chris X? If Ted Cruz were to win the nomination, I would sooner vote for Hillary Clinton.
Chris December 23, 2013 at 09:27 AM
The Republican party has given us Bob Dole, John McCain and Mit Romney to run for the executive branch. All RINO's. And if Peter King is up for election for President I would vote for Hilary too. At Least we know where it is exactly we stand with her. The Republicans have been building coalitions for decades with the other side. Every time I hear the word "bipartisan" I know the American people are screwed! Look beyond Seaford and look where the Country has been heading over the last 20 years. I am sick and tired of party first, Country second Politicians. Romney did not win because the American people saw a weak leader. Even Democrats cannot believe Obama got a second term! I am still in shock over that election. The Republicans have failed us over the long term. They will be a footnote in history just like the WHIG's. if they keep "reaching across the aisle." The Republican Democrat paradigm is over. We are in to much trouble economically. John McCain actually wanted to take us to war in Syria!!! That would have started WW III. Do you want our young men and woman fighting for some rebel terrorists?! See beyond party labels. We need a leader who can stand up for the American people. You and I. I do not know who that is yet. But I see things for what they are. Not party labels.

Agreeing to disagree, across the board, so to speak. Opinions aside, I wish you peace, and a Merry Christmas, Chris.
