Procacci Challenges Town Board on Recording Meetings

A weekly look-in at news from around the Town of Hempstead.

Democratic Town Supervisor nominee Felix Procacci questioned the Hempstead Town Board at Tuesday's meeting in regards to why town meeting are not recorded for the public to watch.

Procacci, who was named to the Democratic slate last week despite being registered as a Republican, said that one of his proposals, if elected, would be to show all town meetings online.

“I believe all information about Town government should be made available to the public and Kate Murray does not want to do that,” Procacci told Patch.

Newsday [paid link] reported:

Hempstead purchased video and audio equipment with a grant received from a franchise agreement with Verizon to produce public service announcements and broadcast them on cable access channels, town spokesman Michael Deery said during the meeting. After the meeting, Deery said streaming live video would not be a permissible use under the grant.

Of the 15 cities and townships across Long Island, just five -- Hempstead, North Hemsptead, Babylon, Glen Cove and Oyster Bay -- do not record board meetings, according to Newsday.
