Rebates Available for Residents Affected by Storms

Program started this week.

Storm-weary Wantagh and Seaford residents are about to get some needed relief from the state, as Gov. Cuomo announced the launch of an $8 million appliance and equipment rebate program.

Rebate applications will be available starting Sept. 19. In order to qualify for the program, Wantagh and Seaford residents who were or Tropical Storm Lee must have made purchases of approved Energy Star or High Efficiency appliances and equipment on or after Aug. 29 and Sept. 9, respectively.

The following products are eligible under this rebate program: refrigerators ($350), clothes washers ($250), clothes dryers ($250), dehumidifiers ($100), furnaces ($2,000), boilers ($2,500), and qualified hot water heaters (gas storage water heaters, heat pump water heaters, electric water heaters, $400).

Only appliances and equipment that replace those damaged in the storms are eligible for rebates. The only exception is dehumidifiers that can either replace a damaged unit, or have been purchased to reduce humidity resulting from the storm. The New York Storm Relief Rebate Program is providing this assistance exclusively for residents who are not receiving compensation from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) or insurance companies for these appliances or equipment.

These funds were provided from the U.S. Department of Energy’s State Energy Program (SEP), which provides grants to states and directs funding to State Energy Offices from technology programs in DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. SEP is distributing $3.1 billion in funding under the 2009 Recovery Act.

Applicants must be New York residents who sustained property damage resulting from Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee, and the qualified appliances or equipment must be installed at a New York state residential address.

Rebates are only available to residents of single-family homes and multi-family buildings and there is a maximum of one rebate per appliance/equipment type per installation address.

Applications can be filled out online, at NYSApplianceRebates.com, or by calling the program hotline at 1-877-NY-SMART.
