Schmitt Easily Wins Re-Election against Rennhack

Nassau County Legislative Presiding Officer defeats Democratic challenger for ninth term in Mineola.

Nassau County Legislative Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt, R-Massapequa, easily defeated Democratic challenger John Rennhack in his re-election bid Tuesday and will serve a ninth term in Mineola.

With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Legis. Schmitt received 71 percent of the vote. Schmitt defeated Rennhack of North Massapequa by 4,481 votes, 7,541 to 3,066, according to unofficial results released by the Nassau County Board of Elections. The 12th District covers Massapequa, Massapequa Park and portions of Seaford and North Massapequa.

Schmitt has served as the Nassau County Legislature’s Presiding Officer and Majority Leader since January 2010. He served as the Legislature's Deputy Presiding Officer from 1996 through 1999 and Minority Leader from 2000 through 2009.

This was the fourth time that Rennhack has challenged Schmitt’s legislature seat. The North Massapequa resident also fell to Schmitt in 2003, 2007 and 2009.
