Seaford Fire Department to Take Part in Hempstead Town 9/11 Ceremony

Local firefighters scheduled to erect flag arches at service scheduled for Point Lookout Tuesday on 11th anniversary of terrorist attacks.

The will be taking part in the Town of Hempstead’s annual seaside 9/11 memorial ceremony in Point Lookout.

Seaford is one of four fire departments along with Levittown, Point Lookout-Lido and Woodmere and Seaford Fire Departments scheduled to erect flag arches during the service scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The ceremony at Town Park in Point Lookout will be on the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 when nearly 3,000 people were killed during terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa. 

“The beach at Town Park Point Lookout has traditionally served as a place of peace and tranquility for town residents during their time of reflection upon the events of 9/11,” said Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray. “We invite all residents to join us on September 11th at 7:30 a.m. to remember the victims and honor their legacy.”

A major component of the town’s 9/11 ceremony will be interactive, including a 35-foot long mural of the New York City skyline and a 15-foot tall shadow box image of the Twin Towers. At the conclusion of the ceremony, residents can write messages, prayers and the names of victims on the mural.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.
