Sen. Schumer Appears in Wantagh Calling for Better Gas Price Disclosure

New York senior senator holds new conference in front of Gulf station on Sunrise Highway.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, made an appearance in Wantagh Monday calling on gas stations to provide better disclosure of its prices for filling up a tank.

The New York senior senator held a news conference in front of the Gulf station on 3309 Sunrise Highway in Wantagh addressing how drivers who use credit or debit cards to fill up their gasoline tanks pay up to 10 cents more a gallon.

Schumer has sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission asking them to consider rules requiring greater disclosure of prices that are posted on gas station road signs so that customers know the difference between paying by cash versus credit card.

The senator pointed to the Gulf station on Sunrise Highway in Wantagh as one of many examples on Long Island where the main signs giving gasoline prices do not clearly state it is for cash payments.

"There are loads and loads of gas stations on Long Island that charge the two separate prices and drivers are not informed," Schumer said. "Drivers shouldn't get sticker shock when they expect one price and then get another."

Artie Rosenthal, who owns the Gulf Station, said his signs next to the gas pumps clearly state the difference between cash and credit card prices. "It's clearly marked," said Rosenthal, who added that about half of his customers pay with a credit card.
