Spill Reported at Cedar Creek Plant

Nassau County reports that 150-200 gallons of partially treated wastewater spilled onto roadway next to Wantagh facility Monday morning.

A spill was reported at the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in Wantagh Monday morning, according to a notification issued by Nassau County.

County officials said 150-200 gallons of partially treated wastewater spilled onto a roadway next to the plant at 8:15 a.m. The cause of the spill was the malfunction of an effluent wet well bubbler system, the county report states. As a result of the spill, the facility's effluent well was pumped down manually with the affected area chlorinated.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano has been pushing forward with plans to privatize the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant despite the Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) rejecting his proposed contract with Morgan Stanley to broker a deal for the public-private partnership. Prior to NIFA’s ruling, Mangano’s plan involved selecting Harrington Park, N.J. -based United Water as a potential operator for the county’s sewage treatment system for at least 20 years. The plant is located just south of Cedar Creek Park.
