TOH Holding Lottery for Bellmore LIRR Bike Lockers

Eight winners will be selected to have lockers at nearby station for a one-year period.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Angie Cullin, R-Freeport, and Councilman Gary Hudes, R-Levittown, invite locals to participate in a lottery for the use of eight no-cost bike lockers at the Bellmore train station.

The lockers will be available for use by the eight winners for a one-year period, beginning on April 1. The Bellmore Long Island Rail Road station is located a short distance from the Wantagh border off of Sunrise Highway.

“Now entering the second year of this program, eight bike lockers will provide lottery winners with a safe, secure location at which they can lock up their bikes before getting on the train,” Murray said. “The Town of Hempstead encourages all our health-conscious and environmentally minded residents to enter this lottery for a chance to use a free locker for one year.”

Each of the bike lockers is four feet tall, six feet long and 3 ¼ feet wide, all located on the north side of the tracks at the Bellmore LIRR station. Each locker easily fits a standard bicycle, protecting it from damage, theft and bad weather. The town requires a $40 key deposit, which is refunded at the end of the one-year lease. No sub-leasing is permitted.

“Supervisor Murray and I are proud to make these bike lockers available to residents for the second year in a row,” Cullin said.

“We look forward to having eight less cars on the road, and eight more happy and healthy residents in Hempstead Town,” Hudes added.

The winners will be randomly selected during a lottery drawing to be held on March 25. Applications for the lottery, which is being administered by the Town Clerk’s Office, are being accepted through March 18. To obtain an application, residents should contact the Town Clerk’s Office at 516-812-3026.
