Town Extends Pool Hours, Opens Cooling Centers for Weekend

Hempstead officials providing ways for residents to stay cool.

This week's heat wave, which has impacted many areas across the nation as well as on Long Island, prompted Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray to announce the opening of cooling centers and the extension of hours at 13 pools through Sunday, July 24.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s throughout the week, with heat indexes rising over 100 degrees. These conditions can be especially dangerous for young children and senior citizens.

"Our cooling centers offer our residents a comfortable chance to relax and escape the heat wave," Murray said. "Also, many of our town pools are staying open later than usual to give more residents a chance to cool down and refresh themselves after a long day in the heat."

Extreme heat poses health risks, especially for senior citizens and young children. Symptoms that often accompany hot weather include: dehydration, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke.

"Residents looking the beat the heat should take advantage of our cooling centers and our extended pool hours," Murray said. "The sweltering heat poses health risks, so it's also important to check in on elderly neighbors or family members who may be at high risk for heat-related symptoms."
