Trump Jones Beach Project Scrapped

Famed real estate developer's planned restaurant and catering facility in Wantagh will not be built following damages caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The long planned Trump on the Ocean project at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh has been scrapped.

Famed real estate develop Donald Trump and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced Wednesday that as a result of damages to Jones Beach caused by Hurricane Sandy, the proposed restaurant and catering facility will not be built.

The Trump development, which was held up in litigation from 2008-2012 due to a state objection to plans for a basement in a flood zone before being given a green light to proceed last June, was to be built where the Boardwalk Café formerly operated before closing in 2003.

State officials said the location of the planned two-story building totaling 86,000 square feet along with visitor parking “was entirely flooded and experienced battering waves” during the Oct. 29 superstorm.

“Because of the great tragedy of Hurricane Sandy, which has been incredibly devastating to Long Island as a whole, and Jones Beach in particular, we have mutually decided that it is an inappropriate time to build a luxury restaurant and banquet facility at Jones Beach,” Trump said in a statement. “This was a difficult decision for me to make as The Trump Organization was ready, willing and able to build and commence construction next year.”

“Hurricane Sandy has opened everyone’s eyes to the potential risks of building directly on the oceanfront,” said New York State Commissioner Rose Harvey in a statement Wednesday. “Looking over the coming decades, as we face sea level rise and the threat of future damaging storms, we have concluded that building a major new facility directly on the oceanfront, on the scale of the Trump project, is not prudent policy. While I appreciate Donald Trump’s long-standing commitment to this initiative, we have jointly decided to end consideration of the project.”

Trump had planned to invest more than $24 million in private funds to develop the project , which he first conceived in 2006. He was also due to make rent payments totaling around $13 million throughout a 40-year lease that would have been used to help maintain Jones Beach and other state parks.

Wednesday's announcement of Trump on the Ocean being dead was welcomed news to longtime Nassau County activist Patricia Friedman of Garden City Park, who was a staunch opponent of project. Friedman said she hopes a family-style restaurant will now be built at the site.

“God works in strange places," said Friedman of how Hurricane Sandy led to the ultimate scrapping of the catering hall. "It took Sandy to wake them up."

Harvey said that State Parks workers will remove debris and clean up the site where Trump had planned to build his new business. She said in 2013 after millions in damages throughout Jones Beach has been addressed, "the State Parks agency will initiate a planning process to determine the best future use of the area.”

Good riddance. Never should have been considered. It was all Bernadette Castro's fault.

It t5ook an act of God to show the foolishness of this project. Bye-bye Donald.

@ Robert D.
Aw come on i was soooooooooooooooooooooo looking forward to another casino ! lmao. only kidding... Perhaps the powers above have decided that the only food belonging on the beach are good old fashion hot dog and ice cream stands and a return to famlies packing a lunch. While maybe a blow to the prospect if increased local employment this could be a very good thing for family values and a return to an era where the beach IS the destination not the commerce AT the beach.

Certainly a nice restaurant could be built there to serve all of the public, like it once was. Does not have to be extravagant or super large, which would allow for it to be built high on pilings and a nice view of the ocean. Most importantly we won’t have to see the TRUMP name down at our New York State beach.

Congratulations to all of the commenter’s gloating over the demise of this project. Mother Nature has given you that which you could not otherwise obtain. My New Year’s wish for you is to enjoy your pile of debris and the interminable planning process which will follow instead of having Trump and his insurers figure out how to rebuild the building which should have been built years ago, all while making lease payments to the state. I will wager a meal at the irrationally pined for “moderately priced family style restaurant” which will never be built on that site because it makes no economic sense that five years from now you will have nothing but a hole in the ground surrounded by a rusting chain-link fence.

Many of the beaches across the country do NOT have high end rest. however many do have FOOD trucks, many which offer a wide variety of foods. Everything from hot dogs to gourmet offerings. Perhaps an alternative until something concrete can be decided on is to sell permits to food vendors for the upcoming season on a trial basis see how it works if it brings in revenue as well as adds a value and meets the needs of the hungry beach goers. Wouldnt cost the state anything, no buildings to be built and they are portable self contained units that pack up and go at the end of the day. Calfironia has them, as do many of the coastal areas in the south.
Robert Demarco December 27, 2012 at 03:58 pm
And if it had been built years ago it would add to the pile of debris. The beach belongs to the people. Hopefully they will build a restaurant or some other facility that will provide affordable food or entertainment and local employment, for all.

I am not surprised by this turn of events, that what was predicted actually happened. I would like to see "a" restaurant built. I dont particularly care who builds it. I was engaged after a meal at the old restaurant and would appreciate a new venue to celebrate life's chapters and memories. Isnt that what every TOH beach bunny wants?
Chris Wendt December 27, 2012 at 06:54 pm
We could take a lesson from TOBAY Beach where they have two nice venues, one on the beach and the other on the bay side. I think they are both successful. The one one the bay side is more of a destination, and the one on the ocean mostly supports beach goers appetites.
Neither one is very big, and they do not seem to represent huge investments (to be put at risk by nature and the weather). They seem to be "right-sized" for the seasonal nature of the Beach business.

I hope Sandy opened the eyes to all of you blinded by the light of The Donald. Jones Beach is a barrier island, don't risk lives trying to make it something it isn't. A freakin' catering hall!!! Come on now.

Lorraine, You state, "many of the beaches across the country do NOT have high end restaurants". If you would be so kind, please state which beaches around the country you have been to and which do and do not have high end restaurants that would make you more credible, if that is possible. Lorraine, do you know the cost of buying and keeping a FOOD truck operational? You must, as this is your opinionated solution, From your "encyclopediactic" (probably not a word, but it should be) knowledge, please tell everyone how they can begin to use your supreme knowledge about all that is FOOD trucks in order to make a living.
And here is the rediculous part, this is your statement at 8:44 this morning "Perhaps the powers above have decided that the only food belonging on the beach are good old fashion hot dog and ice cream stands and a return to famlies packing a lunch.", but 2 hours later you have another completely contradictory statement. why? No need to respond, Lorraine, everyone knows. But I submit to the jury, she will, and will, and will and will.............AND WILL. Disclaimer: This is not a personal attack, just a statement of fact backed by facts from this same string, written by Lorraine DeVita, and reiterated by me, so as not to violate any T&C that are written by the Patch, and construed by the public, as such, and to not violate any usage determined by users or others as to the usage of this site as to the use of these lines for subsequent use. Fair?
Ralebird December 28, 2012 at 05:44 am
A facsimile of the original restaurant with the capability of a 200 guest reception space would make sense. Some local caterer (Carl, maybe) will make it happen.
Lorraine DeVita December 28, 2012 at 01:47 pm
Do you have something relevant on topic to state? however in light of your request i will elaborate having been to the beaches in FL(both coasts including the keys ) < CAL< SC< NC<NY, Maryland, Delaware , ME, Mass, GA< ALABAMA< TX< as well internationaly.
. I can also say with some certainty that food trucks, have LOW overhead because two friends who are retired from owning 2 successful rest one in NYC and another in LA own a very successful food truck operation in LA beach areas in Cal. , that the COST to own and operate a food truck is a heck of a lot lower then owning a brick and mortar building. Additonaly having family IN the rest business, i can also say after conferring witht them that they too agree the COSt to own and operate a food truck is exceedingly lower . So Patrick, once again i will reply, instead of making this personal and targeting my posts why havent you singled out anyone else, and look forwrd to your repsonding to my question which is what would YOU suggest or recommend for this site at Jones beach. Do you have anything relevant to add to the topic or again is it yet again personal?Patrick You seem fixated. I have no problem with someone countering my posts, especialy if they have something relevant to add to the topic and the discussion. So again what do suggest for the Jones beach site ....
Lorraine DeVita December 28, 2012 at 02:22 pm
Does anyone know why the orginal boardwalk rest closed ? Was it the condition of the building itself or a profitability issue or did the lease end and no other party was interested ?
Hilarity Jones December 28, 2012 at 02:47 pm
@Lorraine:
I ask you which beaches have and do not have high end rest. Your response....you tell everyone where you have vacationed. I ask YOU if YOU know the cost of buying and operating a food truck. Your response....I know these people who do these things, but no answer. I am on topic. You make statements "on topic", I ask you to expound on those statements and to tell everyone what factual basis you have used to make these statements. You, for some reason, can not back these statements directly. You know someone who has..... I have been here, there and everywhere. Nothing concrete, nothing yours. Never a direct answer, always deflection. And then you expect me to answer your questions? So I will, because I don't want to have my name associated with someone who can not answer direct questions. I had no problem with what Trump was proposing, and it is to bad this has fallen through. A top notch restaurant with ocean views would be a draw to what is now an empty space. For you to say that a fleet of "food trucks" would be a suitable alternative is just rediculous, as it is not a solution for the existing problem. Just as an aside, I have been to every locale that you have listed, and can firmly state that with very few exceptions, all beaches in those locations have restaurants that run the gamit of tastes, from low end food shacks (some of the best food) to five star joints. If you would be interested, I can certainly list a few from each locale.
Hilarity Jones December 28, 2012 at 03:00 pm
Now for the rest. Lorraine, fixated is a poor choice of a word. It is you who open yourself up to my responses, and most everyone out here feels the same way as I do, but they have just given up trying to reason with you. I will not. I will continue to question your expertise, knowledge, reasoning, and thought process' because it is easy and can be debunked almost every time. You take this personally, and you should, because it is you who makes it personal simply by constantly telling everyone how much of an expert you are on all topics. But in reality, as has been shown time and time again, you are not.
By the way, my name is Hilarity, I do not know who this Patrick character you are associating me with is. Your turn.

The building needed too much work to bring it back to a useable state (structural). Traditional method for government run facilities, keeping a facility maintained is generally not in the budget, but demolish and rebuilding with capital money is.
Ralebird December 28, 2012 at 05:40 pm
It was the condition of the building...following a devastating fire. The second restaurant was built cheaply, run poorly and had terrible food.
opinion-ated December 29, 2012 at 03:06 pm
The key would be to find progressive engineers and designer of a building that matches the beautiful art deco architecture of the other magnificient buildings at the beach. In the 1920s Robert Moses and Engineer Herbert Magoon designed and created an amazing park in the midst of a depression. They did this by dredging sand and hand planting the dunes and used fine Sandstone , Granite and Brick and went above and beyond to build some of the most beautiful public beaches that has lasted for generations.
In their honor we need to find someone to create a building could provide wonderful food, outside dining, maybe a rooftop observation area, a porch with rocking chairs , a lobby with a warm cozy seating by a fire in the winter months, music, dancing... the possibilities are endless.

Food trucks until a permanent solution is found would be a great idea. No investment on the part of Nassau County since the trucks are individually owned and some income, but best of all a great variety of food. For those not familiar with the trucks all over NYC, some are owned by really great chefs and actually have a following. They publish maps to show where they will be so people can find them on any given day. We are no longer talking about ice cream and hot dogs, but some really great food. It would certainly be better than nothing for the years until a plan is approved and something is built. Who knows, maybe they could be turned into something more permanent like a food court with some additional ammenities. We need a venue for the public on a public beach with reasonable famility prices, not a high end establishment.

I am saddened that Trump pulled his plans out.
He is a smart businessman and Long Isanders do not deserve his positive vision or help. Long Island gets what it deserves... CRAP...
Amy December 29, 2012 at 05:42 pm
It's sad there will be a pile if junk there left for "the people" to clean up. But first and foremost, we need to clean up our roads, biardwalks, etc.. after Sandy in order to utilize our beaches this coming Summer. What will come of this property who knows, BUT... We've been looking at this empty site for years. It really is the last of the projects on the long list.
Lilly Hayden December 29, 2012 at 06:19 pm
To those who propose food trucks- exactly where would they be parked?
paul December 29, 2012 at 06:34 pm
Wow.
I can not believe what a bunch of negative fools happy that Trump is out. You should all be ashamed in yourselves and stick your head in the sand. As for Patricia Freidman saying: (Key word ACTIVIST) Trump on the Ocean being dead was welcomed news to longtime Nassau County activist Patricia Friedman of Garden City Park, who was a staunch opponent of project. Friedman said she hopes a family-style restaurant will now be built at the site. “God works in strange places," said Friedman of how Hurricane Sandy led to the ultimate scrapping of the catering hall. "It took Sandy to wake them up." She is a really a true Long Island misfit. Go get a check up from the neck up....
Tess December 29, 2012 at 10:58 pm
I have an incredible idea for that site......and everyone will be super suprised at how easy it would be to become successful (and a happy place to eat).... Trump, if you wanna pay me a few milllion just for my idea, and YOU build it (giving me 10% of the profits) --- get in touch with me.....
Tess December 29, 2012 at 11:02 pm
Forget High-end expensive High-Class (let's all get dressed up) place........ Sell me the property for $1 .......... then lets put something there that will work ! lol

Do you think you are on "SHARK TANK"..
;o)

Well, anything with poles and strippers might work....
Just saying....

The previous restaurant was demolished in 2004 and now after nine years there is no plan to replace it. My family used to enjoy that place and I predicted at the time of its demolition that the state would jerk this around and never replace it. Nothing will be built there for years to come. One of the reasons we left. Robert Moses would be ashamed.
