U.S. HUD Secretary Visits Wantagh For Sandy Cleanup

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan takes part in cleanup of Jones Beach sponsored by Clean Ocean Action.

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan was in Wantagh this past weekend for a Superstorm Sandy cleanup event.

Donovan, who has been tapped by President Obama to lead long-term rebuilding of areas impacted by the Oct. 29 superstorm, took part in a cleanup of Jones Beach State Park held Jan. 19 that was sponsored by the non-profit group Clean Ocean Action. The cleanup was part of the National Day of Service that encourages Americans to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by volunteering in their communities.

Jones Beach suffered extensive damage from Superstorm Sandy with rebuilding efforts now underway.

More than 250 people took part in the Jan. 19 cleanup volunteer effort at Jones Beach including Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Rose Harvey, New York State Commissioner of Parks. A similar Superstorm Sandy cleanup of Jones Beach sponsored by Ocean Conservancy was held on Dec. 8.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.
