Wantagh Avenue Bridge Undergoing Repairs

Nighttime construction work aimed at improve aging structure scheduled to last until end of month.

Repairs on the Wantagh Avenue Bridge over the Southern State Parkway began last month and are scheduled to last until late June.

The construction of the bridge, which is located on the border of Wantagh and Levittown near , is taking place between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. During construction hours, two travel lanes on the bridge are closed.

Eileen Peters, a spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Transportation, said the bridge repair work is needed due to the age of the structure.

“This aging bridge is undergoing repairs and preventive maintenance measures that will improve its condition and strength and thereby help maintain its integrity and reliability,” Peters said. “This will help improve the safety and mobility of the tens of thousands of Long Island motorists who pass over and under the Wantagh Avenue Bridge each day.”

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.
