Bone Marrow Drive Draws Hundreds Trying to Save Wantagh Girl

Nearly 1,000 people get tested at bone bone marrow held for 8-year old Kaitlyn Rochel.

The local commnity came out in force this past Saturday during a bone marrow drive at held to try and find a life-saving match for 8-year old Kaitlyn Rochel as .

Rochel, a  student, is in the midst of her third bout with leukemia, which has forced her from attending school with her classmates and enjoying activities with friends like soccer. Kaitlyn’s mother, Carolyn, 38, wore a T-shirt with her two daughters' pictures during the Jan. 28 bone marrow drive that was attended by nearly 1,000 people inside the Wantagh High School gymnasium, according to Newsday.

Saturday's event also featured raffles, a bake sale and Hope for Kaitlyn bracelets that were sold to help raise money for processing each bone marrow sample.

Rochel's mother told Newsday that Kaitlyn's doctors have said the 8-year old is in need of a bone marrow transplant by March to have the best chance of survival.
