East Broadway Students Take Science Field Trip
Students at elementary school located in Seaford learn about insects and arachnids during visit with MacArthur High School research teacher David Friedman.
During the winter semester, students at East Broadway Elementary School in Seaford took a field trip to MacArthur High School for an up-close and hands-on investigation of insects and arachnids.
MacArthur High School research teacher David Friedman and student volunteers enrolled in the Advanced Placement Environment course, the science research program and the Environmental Club all worked together to make the experience possible. Also joining the East Broadway youngsters were students from Northside Elementary School in Levittown.
During their visit, the students examined the different characteristics of these organisms and had a chance to handle Madagascar hissing roaches and betsy beetles. They also got up close and personal with a rose hair tarantula and a scorpion. The students had a great time discussing habitats and food chains and handling the creatures.
Mr. Friedman explained that MacArthur High School’s research facilities are ideal for the teaching of science to younger students.
“We are trying to foster an understanding of the natural world and create an interest in science from the lower grade levels up,” he stated.
