Fundraising Efforts Underway to Save Seaford MS Winter Sports

Save Seaford Sports Committee needs to raise $73,000 to bring back winter middle school athletic teams not included in 2012/13 budget.

The Save Seaford Sports Committee has launched fundraising efforts to try and restore the winter athletic teams at Seaford Middle School not included in the 2012/13 budget.

Save Seaford Sports organizers are in need of $73,000 for the entire winter season at Seaford Middle School. The first part of the winter season, which begins in mid November, includes boys basketball, girls volleyball and cheerleading. Save Seaford Sports needs to raise $45,000 to restore the winter 1 season and $28,000 for winter II, which commences in mid January and includes girls basketball and wrestling.

The Save Seaford Sports Committee sent a mass email last week saying that if restoration efforts for the winter middle school athletic seasons are unsuccessful, an intramural league could be run for $9,000. The intramural program would take place from December to March and include boys and girls basketball, volleyball and floor hockey.

Seaford's $57.8 million budget approved by voters in May only includes funding for the Seaford Middle School spring season. The 2011/12 budget only funded the fall middle school season, which prompted the formation of Save Seaford Sports. Last year's Save Seaford Sports fundraising efforts was enough to salvage the winter sports teams but  of being able to bring back the spring athletic teams.

Save Seaford Sports was able to salvage the fall middle school 2012 athletics season after a full-court press in early September led to a slew of $100 donations prior to the Sept. 10 deadline. Donations to help save the winter I season and can be sent to 1802 Park Dr., Seaford, NY 11783.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.

A tantalizing, mind-teasing story about a faceless team with no names who won honorable mention forRead More some project about which we learned absolutely nothing from this article. Journalism 101: Who what, why when and where?
