Inaugural Seaford Relay for Life Getting Huge Response

Even before the  kicks off this Saturday, the cancer fundraiser is already being described as a major success.

Katie Goepfrich, public relations coordinator for the Seaford Relay for Life, said late Tuesday that 306 participants have already signed up and more than 500 are expected by Saturday for the overnight community event scheduled for . All schools in the Seaford School District have been promoting the event as well as some of the local churches, Goepfrich said.

“We’ve gotten an awesome response,” said Goepfrich, who estimates more than $40,000 will be raised from the fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. “It’s going to be a great event.”

The Seaford Relay for Life celebration gets underway at 5 p.m. Saturday with participating individuals and teams camping out on grass areas next to the Ray Buckley Field of Dreams. Each of the teams at the relay will have one of its members circle around the high school track at all times. For entertainment, there will be a magician, face painting and dance groups from the community.

Goepfrich said the most moving part of the evening will come around 9 p.m. when candles will be lit in honor of loves ones and friends lost to cancer. Prior to the relay at 4 p.m. inside , a meeting will be held for local cancer survivors where free t-shirts will be provided.
