Mandalay Students Reach Out to Community

Members of the Student Council have been busy assisting others through school-wide drives.

Mandalay Student Council advisor Cheryl Schwartz said that the students meet every week and undertake many projects and activities to benefit the community as well as the school.

Mandalay’s student council most recently held a food drive at their school, donating the collections to local families in need. Schwartz noted that they are in the middle of a coat drive right now, accepting gently used coats, scarves and gloves. The council has also collected cell phones for soldiers.

Upcoming drives include collecting toys for children who are underprivileged or sick in the hospital. The students are also planning a Valentine’s Day drive in which they will collect snacks, treats and toiletries to send to soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“People are struggling every day of the year,” Schwartz said, “but it’s still nice to see all the donations that people are bringing in for the holidays.”
