Neighborhood Football Bragging Rights at Stake Saturday Between Wantagh and MacArthur

Programs separated by less than two miles to clash on gridiron for first time since 2009 at Wantagh High School Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Neighborhood bragging rights north and south of Jerusalem Avenue will be on the line Saturday afternoon when Wantagh and MacArthur meet on the football field for the first time since 2009.

Saturday’s matchup of neighboring communities scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Wantagh High School was made possible thanks to MacArthur dropping down to Conference II from Conference I for this season. The last meeting between Wantagh and MacArthur, two schools separated by just 1.62 miles, came on Oct. 2, 2009 with the Warriors pulling out a 7-0 home victory.

“It’s a nice neighborhood rivalry with two teams that have the same goals,” said Wantagh football head coach Keith Sachs. “It should be a great game.”

In addition to the close geographic proximity, many of MacArthur’s students reside in Wantagh. The dividing line between the Wantagh and Levittown School Districts is Jerusalem Avenue.

Both Wantagh and MacArthur opened the 2012 campaigns with dominating wins this past weekend and are expected to challenge for the Nassau County Conference II title this fall. The Warriors while the Generals shutout Westbury 28-0 in their season opener Friday night.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.
