Salk MS Students Help School Devastated by Sandy

Local National Junior Honor Society members coordinate fundraiser to help repair school library in Oceanside devastated by Oct. 29 superstorm.

Story by Liz Sobel.

Members of Salk Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) coordinated a fundraiser and book drive to help nearby Boardman Elementary School in Oceanside, whose library was totally devastated during Superstorm Sandy.

NJHS member Jason Waitkus approached the Society with a request to help restore the library at the school where his grandmother, Paula Cimiglia, works. Salk Middle School Principal John Zampaglione welcomed the opportunity for the students to demonstrate their R.I.S.E (Respect, Integrity, Sympathy and Empathy) character traits.

The students’ efforts resulted in the collection of 456 books and a check for $200, donated to the school to aid in its restoration process. In addition, due to the success of the Salk Middle School book fair, the students were able to donate additional books to Boardman.

Salk Middle School is in Levittown School District but includes many students from northern sections of Wantagh and Seaford.
