Seaford High School Valedictorian Profile: Scott Ruona

This week Patch will look at valedictorians and salutatorians in the area.

Scott Ruona has a passion for learning. As a young student at , he fondly recalls his teachers providing the tools he needed to feed his curiosity and make lifelong learning part of his being.

That curiosity has catapulted Ruona to the head of his nearly 230-member class at , earning him the title of valedictorian of the Class of 2011. This fall, Ruona will attend Georgetown University to study International Business and Marketing.

“My greatest strength is my open-mindedness to new ideas and cultures,” Ruona said. “I also love to travel and have been to France and Spain with our school, as well as Alaska, Iceland and islands in the Caribbean,” he said.

With a 112.05 weighted grade-point average, Ruona is an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar of Distinction for his high achievement on several AP exams, and was vice president of National Honor Society and Mathletes. As general chair of Model Congress, he helped lead his delegation through one of its best seasons yet.

“Competing in Model Congress has been a highlight of my high school career because we debated interesting topics, and I enjoyed being part of a team, making friends and representing the school,” Ruona said.

Compassionate and optimistic, Ruona advises underclassmen to make the most of their education and to care about the needs of others on a local and global level.

“There are solutions to many of the widespread problems in the world,” he said. “It is just a matter of time before we find them. I believe that our class, myself included, has the potential to find these solutions as long as we care enough to do so.”
