Seaford Residents Cook Up a Plan to Save Middle School Sports

Community members host a Pampered Chef party, one of many fundraising efforts to raise $141,000 to save middle school winter and spring sports that were cut from budget.

Dedicated Seaford residents cooked up a plan to support winter and spring sports, which were cut due to the recent budget failure, by hosting a Pampered Chef party on Aug. 11.

The party was one of many fundraisers by the Save Seaford Sports Committee, consisting of about 12 residents, who meet every two weeks to discuss ideas.

“We chose to do this fundraiser because it’s an opportunity for people to get together, be with friends, have fun and at the same time help out a great cause,” said Risa Price, co-president of the committee and a Seaford resident for 12 years, who hosted the event at her house.

The party featured a live kitchen show, organized by Stacy DeNatalie of Pampered Chef. Price is hoping to collect between $1,500-2,000 through the event, with a percentage of it being used to support school sports.

“Sports are one aspect of creating a well-rounded child,” Price said.

Her son, who is entering eighth grade, loves to play baseball, which will be cut if enough money isn’t fundraised.

The tentative goal is to raise $141,000, with half of it being raised by mid-October.

Annmarie Lynch, co-president of the committee and a Seaford resident for 38 years, also has a son entering eighth grade. He plays football, basketball, baseball and wrestling.

“Our kids can’t compete with other kids that do have sports,” said Lynch. “Also, sports keep them off the streets.”

She added that without sports, property values in the area will go down.

The Save Seaford Sports Committee has a slew of other fundraisers planned.

This coming Monday, Brooklyn Square Pizza, at 3620 Merrick Rd., is donating a portion of its proceeds to the cause. On Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. a carwash will be held at the Applebees in Bellmore.

There will also be a bowling fundraiser on Aug. 17 at 300 Long Island Bowling on 895 Walt Whitman Rd from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., featuring two hours of unlimited bowling, shoe rental, pizza and soda for $25.

The Save Seaford Sports Committee is urging for more support from the community.

“If you can’t donate, you can help out at events,” said Lynch. “I just want people to come out and join in. We can’t do this alone.”
