Wantagh and Seaford Students Graduate at High Rate

Both districts have graduation rates over 90 percent in latest figured released by State Department of Education.

Both Wantagh and Seaford High School continue to have high graduation rates, according to data released by the New York State Department of Education earlier this week.

Wantagh’s graduation rate was 98 percent for 2010, a one percent increase from the previous year. Seaford’s graduation rate slipped two percentage points, but it still a high number at 92 percent.

Since the figures were released by the state, Seaford superintendent Brian Conboy has tried to clarify incorrect data that Newsday printed in its Tuesday edition that stated Seaford’s graduation rate was 84 percent.

“Even 92 percent is a figure that we feel we can improve upon but I also know that there are some students that were in the 2006 ninth grade cohort that are still with us that will be graduating next week so while they didn’t graduate in four years some of these students will be graduating after five years of high school,” said Conboy.

Wantagh superintendent Dr. Lydia Begley expressed major satisfaction with the district’s graduate rate figures.

“These latest results prove that our academic efforts in the classroom are effective,” said Dr. Begley. “The percentage of graduating seniors, along with the number of students graduating with Advanced Designation, is amongst the highest in Nassau County. We wish to congratulate and thank our students for their hard work, their parents for their support, and our teachers for working so diligently to make our district so successful.”
