Fitzpatrick became the first award winner in the category of Best News Article, the most prestigious writing category in the contest. Not only was her award the ultimate as solo gold, it was also the first gold won by a Wantagh journalism student in three years. The preceding winner was Jackie Dresch, who won gold awards in the Adelphi contest and the statewide ESSPA contest sponsored by Syracuse University, where Dresch is currently a senior majoring in television journalism.
