Wantagh High School Valedictorian Profile: Nicole Kelly

This week Patch will look at valedictorians and salutatorians in the area.

In meeting with seniors this fall, the consensus was that Nicole Kelly was going to be named Valedictorian. Sure enough, when rank was released in early October, Nicole Kelly came out on top. According to her classmates, Nicole wasn’t “the” valedictorian; she was “our” valedictorian.

Nicole goes about the business of being nearly perfect without much fanfare.  She rarely calls attention to herself. Even when given accolades, she is modest and humble, often turning the attention to others who have been recognized, the team who supported her, or the family who stands behind all she does.  Unassuming and seemingly effortless in attaining her fantastic grades, her unweighted average of 99.1 is one of the highest has ever seen.

Nicole is more than an academic powerhouse; she is a dynamic student leader and an esteemed athlete. Nicole is the Captain of the varsity volleyball team, having earned All- Tournament and All-County recognition. She is Drum Major of the Wantagh High School Marching Band, a truly coveted position bestowed on only the most mature student and most competent musician. Nicole is treasurer of both our Key Club and Band Council. She is also Captain of the Science Olympiad Team.  Many do not know that Nicole is a second degree black belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate!

Nicole has also volunteered for over 300 hours in the Nassau University Medical Center emergency room assisting in any way she could, enjoying the fast-paced and unpredictable chaos she witnessed. In her seeking of true and dynamic experiences, it is obvious that Nicole is not interested in doing things merely to impress others. True to her inquisitive nature, the volunteer experience only helped to solidify her interest in becoming a physician.

Nicole is pleasant in her brilliance, polite in her academic debate and inclusive in her approach to school leadership.  She is admired by many, but doesn’t seem fazed by her academic or athletic responsibilities. Nicole Kelly’s transcript has indicated that she is the Valedictorian of the Class of 2011, but more importantly, she has been acknowledged by our faculty, our school, and most of all by her classmates, to be our finest representative. Next year, Nicole will become a member of Georgetown University’s Class of 2015!
