2 Wantagh HS Alums Excel For Hofstra at Wrestling Tourney

Former Warrior grappler Steve Bonanno wins 125-pound title and Matt Loew places seventh at New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships.

Two wrestling products excelled for Hofstra at the New York State Collegiate Championships this past weekend.

Hofstra red-shirt sophomore wrestler Steve Bonanno, a 2008 Wantagh graduate, captured the 125-pound title during the tournament held at Binghamton University. Bonanno, who captured a state title at Wantagh his senior season in 2008, defeated Columbia's Penn Gottfried, 8-3 in the 125-pound championship match. Bonanno's performance in Binghampton earned him Colonial Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week honors.

Hofstra freshman Matt Loew, a 2010 Wantagh graduate, finished in seventh place at 197 pounds during the New York State Collegiate Championships. Loew, a two-time New York State High School runner, posted a 3-2 record during the tournament including an 8-1 victory over Columbia’s Mike in the seventh-place match.

Hofstra, which wrestled without four starters, finished in fifth place at the New York State Collegiate Championships with 92.5 points. Hofstra (7-3-1) is next in action against Army tomorrow in a 7 p.m. match at the Mack Sports Complex.
