Former Wantagh Lacrosse Standout Honored for Stellar Defense

Hofstra women's lacrosse defender April Iannetta named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Defensive Player of the Year.

Wantagh native April Iannetta made a switch of positions for her sophomore season on the Hofstra women’s lacrosse team and this week her versatility was rewarded. 

Iannetta, who was converted from midfield to defense prior to the 2013 season, earned Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors during the league’s annual awards banquet Thursday evening. The 2011 Wantagh High School graduate has led Hofstra in caused turnovers (51) and is second on the team in both draw controls (51) and ground balls (45). She has also continued to be an offensive force with 12 goals and six assists.

The solid play of Iannetta has helped lead Hofstra (11-7) to the CAA title game Sunday against Towson and with a win the Pride will earn its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2007. The Wantagh product scored a key goal in Hofstra’s 6-4 CAA semifinal win against James Madison Friday that knotted the score 3-3 early in the second half.

Iannetta also shines in the classroom and was a CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award recipient as a freshman. She was an honor student at Wantagh High School while starring in lacrosse, soccer and basketball.
