Former Wantagh Wrestler Earns CAA Rookie of the Week Honors

Hofstra freshman Matt Loew receives conference accolades after first career pin in match against Harvard.

Hofstra freshman wrestler and graduate Matt Loew was named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Week on Feb. 16 after posting two wins in matches against Lock Haven and Harvard.

On Feb. 9, Loew defeated Lock Haven’s Derek Caldwell 6-3 in a 197-pound bout during the Pride’s 26-6 win. Three days later Loew picked up his first career pin over Harvard’s Bryan Panzano in a 39-8 Pride victory.

Following the CAA Rookie of the Week honors Loew continued his hot wrestling on Feb. 16 when he posted a reversal with three seconds remaining in a match with Rider’s Joe Ferber to win 6-5. On Saturday the Wantagh High School product defeated Princeton’s Daniel Santoro 7-5 for his 12th dual match win of the season.

Loew at Hofstra after a stellar high school career at Wantagh, where he was a two-time runner-up at the New York State Championships. Hofstra (13-4-1) has won nine of it last 10 matches and is next in action Tuesday evening against Army starting at 7 p.m.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.
