Magical Season Ends for Seaford Girls Basketball

Lady Vikings fall at Garden City in Nassau County Class A Quarterfinals Tuesday evening.

It took seven minutes into the first quarter of Tuesday night's Nassau County Class A quarterfinal game before the Seaford girls basketball team was able to get their first points on Garden City. That's how tenacious the Lady Trojans' defense was during a 44-20 win at Garden City that ended a magical season for the Lady Vikings.

"Defense, defense, defense, that's what it's all about," said Garden City head coach Anthony Sparacia. "I thought our defense was fantastic tonight."

The Lady Trojans did an excellent job of keeping Seaford from getting the ball inside their 2-3 zone. They forced the Lady Vikings to shoot contested shots from the outside and did not allow them second shot opportunities.

On the rare moments when Seaford was able to penetrate the zone, forward Christina Mangels did a solid job of keeping her hands up and rebounding the ball off of missed shots. The 5'10 junior had 11 rebounds for the night.

The Lady Trojans led 14-5 after the first quarter. Seaford's Stephanie Meyer and Nicole Nulty hit a couple of shots early in the second to make things interesting before guard Kim Ryan lowered the boom with a big three-point shot. The shot sparked the Trojans offense and helped give them an 18-point advantage at the half 29-11.

The offensive production slowed down for Garden City in the second half as the Lady Trojans managed to score only 15 points. It did not matter though as they held a sizeable lead on the Lady Vikings, cruising to a 44-20 victory.

"We were a little bit off offensively tonight, particularly in the second half," said Sparacia. "We could afford to do it tonight since we had a big lead on them. In the semifinals we are going to need to up our production."

Seaford's 2010-11 season ended at 11-7 overall. The Lady Vikings finished 8-2 in Conference A-IV and captured itd first ever regular season league championship. Seventh-seeded Seaford had advanced to Tuesday''s quarterfinal with a 51-43 over three-time defending county champion Floral Park this past Friday.

The number two seeded Lady Trojans (16-3) advanced to face third-seeded South Side in a compelling semifinal matchup next Tuesday at Freeport High School starting at 7 p.m.
