New York Cosmos Cut the Ribbon at Mitchel Field

The dirt field has been transformed into a new practice facility for the pro soccer club.

The New York Cosmos celebrated the ribbon cutting of their new practice facility at Mitchel Field Thursday.

Joined by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and other local officials, the Cosmos invested $400,000 to rehab the dry dirt field and transform it.

"My administration is proud of this third public-private partnership for our park system that invests private sector dollars in public facilities for our residents," Mangano said. "From the construction of new state-of-art ice rinks in Eisenhower Park to this new practice facility for the Cosmos, Nassau is becoming a sports-entertainment destination that attracts tourism dollars to our region."

Last month, the Cosmos won a Request for Proposal (RFP) to develop the field, but they were required to renovate the field and pay rent to Nassau County for use of the land. When soccer is not in season, the public will be allowed to use the facility.

“This is another exciting step in the reboot of the Cosmos,” Former Cosmos Goalie Erik Stover said. “As a professional team, it’s very important to have great partners. With Nassau County, we have that and more. This couldn’t have happened without their support. Now, we’re looking forward to the next big step – Cosmos Opening Day on Aug. 3 at Hofstra.”
