Seaford Baseball Advances, Wantagh Season Ends

Vikings move to quarterfinals with win at Division; Warriors eliminated from playoffs in loss to Island Trees.

The Wantagh and Seaford baseball teams both had must-win playoff games against Levittown schools Tuesday with one postseason run continuing and another season abruptly ended.

Wantagh, which went undefeated in the regular season, was eliminated from the playoffs by 15th-seeded Island Trees, 2-0. Ninth-seeded Seaford however was able to keep its dreams of a Nassau County Class A title alive with a 4-3 victory at Division.

The Vikings jumped out to a 4-0 lead paced by a three-run homer in the sixth inning by Michael Breheny. After Division scored three runs to cut the deficit to one, reliever Zach Cachia induced two flyball outs to end the game with the tying run on second base.

Seaford now advances to a best-of-three quarterfinal series against eighth-seeded Garden City starting Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. on the road. Game two of the series is scheduled at Seaford Friday with first pitch slated for 4:45 p.m. The Vikings last reached the quarterfinal round in 2011.

Top-seeded Wantagh faced elimination Tuesday after a 4-0 setback to Garden City on Monday. Island Trees broke open a scoreless game in the seventh inning with two runs including a solo homer by Louis Mele. The Bulldogs also ended Wantagh’s season last year in the quarterfinals.
