Seaford Baseball Drops Game 1 of Quarterfinal Series

Vikings will try and keep magical season alive with victory today against top-seeded Plainedge.

The Seaford baseball team dropped the first game of its Class A quarterfinal best-of-three series at top-seeded Plainedge Thursday afternoon and will face the Red Devils again this afternoon at home to try and keep its magical season alive.

Fourteenth-seeded Seaford (13-9), which advanced  to the quarterfinals with an upset over second-seeded Clarke on Monday, fell 13-0 to its neighbors from North Massapequa in the opening game of the best-of-three series. The Seaford offense was held without a hit until Brian Gilbert and Steven Szobeski got back-to-back singles with two outs in the seventh inning.

Despite the lopsided loss, Seaford head coach Michael Milano said his team’s confidence has not diminished heading into game two of the series Friday afternoon at home.

“We’re no means down about this,” said Milano. “Tomorrow we are home where we play pretty well so we’re excited about it.”

After throwing Mike Kalista in game one Milano said he is deciding between tossing either Bobby Ryan or Szobeski for the second game. Ryan earned the win for the Vikings during Seaford’s playoff win at Clarke Monday.

“They are both fresh since they split the game on Monday,” said Milano.

First pitch for today’s Seaford-Plainedge game at is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. If Seaford wins it will force a third and deciding game tomorrow at Plainedge with the winner advancing to the Class A semifinals.
