The Seaford football team moved a step closer to reclaiming the Nassau County Conference IV title with a convincing first round playoff win against Mineola Saturday.
Seaford is now two wins from a county championship, an achievement the Vikings accomplished for four straight seasons from 2007-2010 before the streak ended last year.
Following Saturday's 41-10 win before the home fans at Seaford High School's Ray Buckley Field of Dreams, longtime Viking head coach Rob Perpall praised the performance of wide receiver Tyler O'Donnell, who had four catches for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His 25-yard scoring reception with less than two minutes left in the first quarter gave the Vikings a 21-7 lead.
“If he played on a team that had a spread offense, he’s all-everything,” Perpall said “We just don’t throw as much but anytime we do, he’s there to make the big catch.”
Seaford senior running back Nick Fischetti was also key for the Viking offensive attack with 26 carries for 159 yards and three touchdowns.
“He just doesn’t wear down, the more carries he gets, the better he gets and if we start seeing something that’s a weakness, we’re just going to go with (him),” Perpall said. “He’s our best player and he’s one of the best backs around, he can really lug it and he just gets better with work.”
Seaford's playoff win, which advances the Vikings to the Nassau County Conference IV semifinals against fourth-seeded Valley Stream North, comes in the midst of many of several Viking players dealing with challenges from the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy on Oct. 29.
“It’s been hard because we’ve had a lot of kids who lost their houses and there’s devastation down there and we realize that that’s a lot more important than a football team,” Perpall said. “It takes their mind off it a little bit and we’ve rallied around them and try to help them get their houses fixed up and all that.”
Seaford's semifinal showdown with Valley Stream North is scheduled for Saturday at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium starting at 5 p.m. A win would advance Seaford to the Nassau County Conference IV title game against either Roosevelt or West Hempstead on Thanksgiving weekend.
