Seaford Girls Soccer Ready to Take On 2011 Season

Lady Vikings aiming for playoffs in a new stronger conference.

The Seaford girls soccer team earned their Conference IV regular season championship in 2010 and will be looking to do more of the same this upcoming season. The Vikings were moved up to a much tougher Conference I this year after going 10-2-2 last year.

Despite the strong regular season, Seaford fell in the first round of the playoffs to Clarke. The programs’ last playoff win came in 2009 in the first round before eventually dropping their next match-up to South Side. The Ldy Vikings will be looking to rewrite their history in the fall of 2011.

“I think it is going to be a very tough conference, but the girls knew what the challenge was from the spring time,” said third-year Seaford girls soccer head coach Suzanne Mooney. “They know what the expectations are now that we are in Conference I, that we have a tough road, but they’re ready for it. We’re ready to fight to try to be conference champions."

Seaford will look to replace All-State forward Nicole Nulty, who was the team's leading scorer for two straight years, as well as All-County defender Victoria Wink and forward Stephanie Meyer.

Stepping up to lead the team will be senior forward Lisa Robinson, who earned All-Class honors last season. Victoria Principe will lead the midfield in her senior season after also earning All-Class honors in 2010. She will be joined by junior Valerie Insardi, who is a returning All-Conference midfielder from last year.

“We have high hopes,” said Robinson. “Division, Garden City and South Side will be the hardest teams we play."

Looking to lead the defense for Seaford will be senior Jess Torrent. The preseason has not been an easy one for the Vikings, as they lost two key players due to injuries; senior Katelyn Rose, an All-County midfielder, and Gabby Kasulké, who was an All-Conference midfielder as a junior last season.

“We have been practicing positions because we have a lot of new people this year and talking to each other and getting to know each other,” said Principe.

Seaford will look to match-up against some of the best competition Nassau County has to offer, including South Side, Garden City, Division and North Shore. The team will also play league games against New Hyde Park and Plainedge.

The Vikings kicked off their season this past Saturday with a non-league game against Manhasset at home, winning by a score of 2-1 on a pair of goals by Robinson.

“The girls that are up-and-coming this year, filling in those spots, are going to do the best they can and everybody has a lot of faith in them and are supporting them,” said Mooney.

Seaford is next in action Monday afternoon on the road against North Shore starting at 4:30 p.m.
