Wantagh Boys Lacrosse Riding Momentum into Playoffs

Warriors are 12-2 entering Thursday's regular season finale with a chance to lock up two seed.

The Wantagh boys lacrosse team is clicking on all cylinders as it prepares for its 2013 playoff run next week.

With a 10-6 win at second place Long Beach Tuesday evening, the Warriors (12-2) carry a six-game winning streak into its regular season finale Thursday against Carey. A victory Thursday will clinch the two seed for the Class B playoffs that begin this Monday.

“We’re playing well late in the season and that is when you want to play your best,” said Wantagh head coach John Ciuffo. “It’s all in front of us.”

Wantagh has achieved success in 2013 despite losing seven starters from last year’s team that reached the Nassau County Class B finals. The Warriors have six players in double digits with goals including Brandon Watson, Brian Quinn, Kyle Cain, T.J. Ragusa and Sean Tomlinson and Mike Ferraro.

“We’ve been hard to stop because the guys are sharing the ball,” Ciuffo said. “A lot of different guys are scoring.” On the defensive side of the field,

Wantagh has been keyed by the dominant goalie play of senior Will Fitzpatrick. The RIT-bound netminder registered 19 saves in Tuesday victory at Long Beach. “He’s the best goalie in Nassau County if not on Long Island,” Ciuffo said. “We’ll ride him right through.”

Wantagh’s regular season finale against Carey Thursday is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. The playoffs are scheduled to begin Monday with the brackets set to be released Friday.
